Rain on the Car Park, and the Journey Time

Amsterdam gets a lot of rain. Most of it is light and brief, and the city carries on around it. Occasionally, particularly in autumn and winter, there is weather that does affect travel: heavy rain on the motorways, strong wind, the odd night of ice. For a booking in central Amsterdam, the forty to sixty minute arrival window absorbs most of this. For an airport hotel, the arrangement works a little differently.

Why the airport is arranged, not timed

In the city, distances are short and routes are many. A journey from one neighbourhood to another can bend around a closed street without much delay. The airport is further out and reached by fewer roads. When one of those roads is slow, there are not many alternatives.

This is one of the reasons airport hotels are served by arrangement. The house agrees the journey time with you in the thread before anything is fixed, looking at the hour, the day and the conditions. On a clear Tuesday evening that is a simple conversation. On a Friday evening in a storm it may produce a later time, or a suggestion to move to another evening.

What changes on a wet night

Most of the time, nothing visible. The journey is agreed, the time holds, and she arrives as planned. What occasionally changes is the margin. On a night with heavy rain or an accident on the motorway, an agreed time may slip by a quarter of an hour, and the house will say so in the thread as soon as it is clear.

It helps to leave a little space around the booking on bad-weather nights. If you have a firm deadline, such as an early alarm, mention it when you book, so the time can be set with that in mind.

Inside the room

Inside an airport hotel, weather is almost irrelevant. The windows are sealed, the heating is steady, and the sound of rain barely reaches through the glazing. If anything, a wet night makes the room feel warmer and more enclosed, which suits a session. Many guests find they prefer an evening of rain in an airport room to a clear one; there is a pleasant sense of being indoors while the weather goes on outside.

What does come in from the weather is the therapist herself. She will have crossed a car park or a forecourt, and may arrive with a wet umbrella and a damp coat. A hook on the back of the door or a chair near the entrance for her things is a small courtesy that makes a difference.

Force majeure, and what it is not

Weather rarely stops a booking outright. When it does, for example if roads are closed by official instruction or transport is shut down, nothing is forfeited. The deposit becomes credit, held against a date you choose later. That is force majeure, and it is described on the cancellation page.

Ordinary bad weather is different. A wet evening that makes you decide you would rather not have a session is a change of plan on your side, and it follows the notice scale like any other cancellation. The distinction is between conditions that make the journey impossible and conditions that make the evening less appealing.

Flights and storms

Storms do affect flights, and a flight cancelled by bad weather is one of the usual reasons an airport-hotel booking changes. If your flight is cancelled and you are staying another night, the booking can often simply move: one free move to a date within fourteen days, if asked for more than twenty-four hours ahead. If the change comes inside the final day, it is treated on the notice scale. Tell the house as soon as you know.

Wind

Wind is the weather that most affects the airport itself. On a very gusty day, runways change, flights are delayed, and some are cancelled. It also makes the walk from a car park to a hotel entrance unpleasant. None of it affects the room, and a booking already agreed usually goes ahead as planned; it is the flights around it that move.
