She lives in the Jordaan, is twenty-four, and speaks French and English with equal ease. Airport hotels are, to her, a particular kind of quiet: triple glazing, heavy doors, a thermostat set by someone who checked out last week. She resets it, dims the room and asks one or two questions and no more. Guests the night before a job interview or a contract signing tend to book an hour and sleep better for it. Her route out to Schiphol is agreed beforehand, minutes and all.

Banks decides which bookings she takes and may decline any of them; she sets the limits for what a session includes, says what they are, and may end a visit at any point, as the terms set out.
