A Room Booked Until Four in the Afternoon

Airport hotels sell rooms by the block of hours to passengers with a long connection, and a session can fit inside one if the clock is worked out in advance. Here is how the arithmetic goes, and where it tends to fail.

Many hotels close to the airport sell what are usually called day rooms: a room for a block of hours during the day, typically four to six, at a lower price than a full night. They are aimed at passengers with a long wait between flights who want a shower, a sleep and somewhere to leave a bag. They are real rooms, with a bed, a bathroom and a door that locks, and a session can take place in one. The difficulty is not the room. It is the clock.

Landside only

The first thing to settle is which side of passport control the room is on. A therapist can only reach a room landside, in a hotel you can walk into from the street or the shuttle bus. Hotels and rest facilities airside, behind security, are out of reach for any visitor. If your connection means you never leave the secure area, a day room there does not allow for a session.

If you do go through passport control and out to a landside hotel, you will also need to come back through security for your onward flight, which adds time to the end of the day.

Working backwards

The arithmetic starts at the moment the room must be handed back, not the moment it becomes available.

Take a room available from ten in the morning until four in the afternoon. Say you want to be in the terminal for a flight at seven in the evening, which in practice means leaving the hotel at about half past four. That already pushes past the room's end time, so the real limit is four.

Subtract half an hour for a shower, dressing and packing at the end. That puts the close of the session at half past three. A two hour session starts at half past one. That leaves the late morning for sleep, lunch or both, and means the session falls in the middle of the day.

Now look at the journey. The house agrees a journey time with you in the thread before anything is fixed. If the booking is made the day before, the start time of half past one can usually be agreed without difficulty. If it is made that morning, with the clock already running, there is far less room to adjust.

Where it goes wrong

Most day-room bookings that fail do so because the guest waited until checking in to ask. By that point the window has already started to shrink, and the journey time eats into what is left. A booking arranged the day before, or even from the departure lounge of the previous flight, has much more room to work.

The other failure is an inbound delay. If your first flight lands late, the day room starts late, but it still ends at the same time. A session booked for half past one may need to move. Tell the house in the thread as soon as you know; the earlier the message, the more options there are.

Deposit and changes

Every airport-hotel booking carries a deposit of half, and a day-room session is no exception. If a delay forces a cancellation, the cancellation policy applies as it does anywhere: with more than twenty-four hours' notice, the whole deposit returns; inside the final day and before she has left, half is kept; once she is on her way, the deposit is kept unless the time is taken by another client. A delayed inbound flight is an ordinary change on the guest's side, not force majeure.

What the room needs

A day room is prepared like any other airport room, with one difference: it has usually just been cleaned and cooled for a guest who wants to sleep. Turn the heating up as soon as you arrive, not half an hour before the session, because you will want to sleep first and the room will stay cool while you do.

Is it worth it

For a long connection with a proper landside room and a day's notice, yes, and a Schiphol hotel massage in the middle of a long travel day can make the second flight feel very different from the first. It turns eight dead hours in a terminal into a sleep, a session and a shower. For a short connection, a room booked on arrival, or a room airside, it is usually not possible, and a session is better planned for a trip with a night in it. The guide to which airport room works looks at day rooms alongside the other kinds.
